8 Year Weight, a Minneapolis based 3-piece rock/punk/garage band originally from Red Wing, MN, has released their first full length album, Top of the World, in late April 2018. The band started 2 ½ decades ago when the boys were fresh and ready to take on the world. Life intervened in the subsequent years to follow, but the band remained intact throughout. 8 Year Weight has a huge catalog of original songs, from blistering punk to dirty rock and ethereal numbers, and finally got around to putting 11 of them on their first record. thanks to the skills and patience of the bass players son, Elliot Thomas.
The guys played in several bands in the Red Wing, St. Paul and Minneapolis area starting in the early 90’s and formed 8 Year Weight in 1994 in an apartment above a donut shop in Red Wing. They started writing songs immediately and have haunted the local clubs, dive bars, VFW’s and bowling alleys ever since. Known for their guitar driven, loud and unpredictable live shows, their heart on the sleeve lyrics and vocal harmonies, 8 Year Weight has never stopped working; writing songs and playing every weekend for years, upcoming show or not, just to survive the daily grind.
All kids of the ‘80’s and ‘90’s, 8 Year Weight is largely influenced by The Replacements, Soul Asylum, The Descendents, Big Drill Car, The Gear Daddies, Husker Du and Lifter Puller to name a few, keeping solid roots in honest lyrics, hard driving loud chords, huge percussion and raucous live shows.
