A Popular History Of Signs were a North London group led by Andrew Jarman (vocals, bass) together with various line-ups over the years.
They issued their first three 7” singles, Justice Not Vengeance, Crowds and Dancing With Ideas between 1980 – 82 on their own Melodia label. Signing to Jungle Records they then issued three 12” singles, If She Was A Car/Stigma, House/Ladderjack, and Body & Soul, prior to an album, ‘Comrades’ (1984).
They got the attention of Al Jourgensen of Ministry, who remixed Ladderjack and House for release in the USA on Chicago’s Wax Trax label.
Another 12” single came in 1986 under the abbreviated name of ‘a-pop’, and a singles collection album ‘Taste’ was issued. Their final record was ‘England In The Rain’, a mini-album in 1988.
Andrew Jarman continued under the Southern Arts Society moniker, recording and playing live in Spain.
