Above the Ocean are a Modern Metal/Alternative Metal band formed in 2022 in Évora, Portugal. Their sound is defined by the mix and contrast between aggressive and melodic moments, heaviness and catchiness, ranging from Metalcore to Groove, Nu Metal, and everything in between, incorporating some electronic elements.
Considered one of Portugal’s most promising new metal bands, Above the Ocean played their first ever show in a sold-out Sociedade Harmonia Eborense, in their hometown, in October 2023.
2024 saw the release of the singles “Love Song (For the Broken” and “Therapy”, plus their respective music vídeos, which have already garnered thousands of views and streams, and were acclaimed for their emotional and cathartic lyrics.
In the summer of 2025, Above the Ocean won the band contest to play at Comendatio Music Fest, Portugal’s finest Prog/Modern Metal festival, where they stood out for their captivating stage presence and interaction with the audience, and played for the first time at the iconic RCA Club in Lisbon.
The band ended 2025 on a high note, by releasing their 3rd single "Thank You", part of their debut album, due for a 2026 release.
Above the Ocean are: José Saruga (vocals), André Vicente (guitars, vocals), Pedro Santos (guitars), André Bagorro (bass), and João Carvalho (drums).
