A. C. Bhaktivedanta, also called Swami Prabhupāda, (born Sept. 1, 1896, Calcutta—died Nov. 14, 1977, Vrindāvan, Uttar Pradesh, India), world religious leader who brought the Vedic wisdom to the Western World. He established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness in 1965 in New York and established over 100 temples around the world, bringing the message of vaishnavism, monotheistic tradition within the Hindu culture. His teaching became foundational for the rise of bhakti-yoga in the modern day.
