Actionslacks formed in Berkeley, California, in 1994 when Marty Kelly answered a “drummer wanted” ad posted by singer-guitarist Tim Scanlin and bassist Mark Wijsen in a record store.

The band’s debut, Too Bright Just Right Goodnight (Skene!), was released in 1995, followed by 1998’s One Word (Arena Rock Recording Co.), and 2001’s The Scene’s Out of Sight (Self-Starter Foundation), which was recorded and co-produced by J. Robbins of Jawbox. Guitarist-singer-keyboardist Chuck Lindo and bassist Aaron Rubin (The Mr. T Experience, Samiam) contributed to the recording of Scene, with Lindo joining the band soon after.

Ex-Amateur Night bassist Ross Murray joined the band in 2002. The new line-up of Kelly, Scanlin, Lindo & Murray would constitute the “classic” incarnation of the band, and produce some of its best work.

Following Scanlin and Kelly’s relocations to Los Angeles and Waterville, Maine, respectively, the band released a fourth LP, 2003’s Full Upright Position (Self-Starter Foundation), which spawned one of their most popular songs, “We Are Not The Losers Anymore”, Scanlin’s tribute to Kelly, his longtime friend and musical partner in crime.

A 2009 EP, Kids With Guitars, was followed by the band’s swan song, 2012’s self-titled EP. Its closing song “Don’t Merit A Mention”, a wistful but powerful rumination on the band’s 18-year journey, is a fitting end.

Lindo now plays guitar in <a href="spotify:artist:1RvQ1vR03CtKKfjoi0eXx0" data-name="All the Days">All the Days</a>, while Scanlin re-emerged in 2025 with a new band, <a href="spotify:artist:1ZsKys1oY76OllwGglSIE6" data-name="God Tamers">God Tamers</a>.
