From starting out as a classical cellist, to playing in a cover band in Montreal, to building his solo
career in Toronto, Adrian Underhill has always embraced life’s transitions. His first taste of
musical community came as a singer and guitarist in his hometown of Vancouver where he
played in an indie band in the city’s scrappy DIY music scene. A move across the country to
Montreal in early adulthood left him alone in a new musical world for the first time, but his
desire to find connection through music had him combing through Craigslist where he was
recruited to play in an AC/DC tribute band. It was the beginning of the long way to the top for
Adrian, but he would eventually go on to start his solo project in 2012 with the release of an EP
and a healthy group of friends behind him, including acclaimed songwriter and now label mate,
Charlotte Cornfield, who played drums in his project’s early days. Soon after, he relocated to
Toronto where, once again finding himself short on collaborators, he rebuilt his song-writing
practice, moving away from a band-driven guitar sound to explore keyboards, synthesizers,
samplers and drum machines. His new self-sufficient approach led to a whirlwind of creation
resulting in a record deal with Indica Records and the release of his debut album CU Again,
which saw him collaborating with Grammy-winning producer Adam Bainbridge (aka Kindness),
known for working with Robyn, Solange, and Blood Orange.
