Alphonse Tutu Dasa aka African is a Ghanaian reggae songwriter and singer known for his good melodies and harmonies. His music can be described as African roots reggae, and he sings in English and his mother tongue Dagari. He is born in Takoradi, in the western region of Ghana, and derives from Wa in the northwestern region of Ghana. In 1985 he relocated to Trondheim, Norway.
He was first a dj, but in 1989 he started his musical career with his band “Survival” after he had a vision from His Majesty Haile Selassie to go out and play reggae music. His release “Sunshine” was after few weeks a hit, followed by two albums.
He was under management of EMI records and TK records, Norway in the nieties, and has been releasing independently to this day. He attended to shows like TMV Festival in Trondheim together with the likes of Black Uhuru and Gregory Isaac, Rockefeller Music Hall and in Tromsø during the nineties. He also did recordings with Sly and Robbie with Peter Tosh band in 1993.
African also had a close relation with the reggaelegend Joseph “Culture” Hill, whom he met in Rockefeller Music Hall in 1991, and visited him in Jamaica several times.
The new album Kanviela is an album full of humour, love and returning to his Ghanaian roots. The album is produced with support from Art Council Norway.
