After Church

After Church is a Phoenix, Arizona folk-rock act that acts as the confessional mouthpiece for vocalist and songwriter James Hall. An outlet for Hall’s introspection, After Church is lyrically driven by a desire to honestly evaluate ourselves and our failings to better understand how we can function through the emotional harm and self-destructive tendencies we all experience. Sonically, the band blends aspects of folk and rock to lay down a soundscape which oscillates between simple, somber acoustic guitar and room filling, blues inspired choruses. The band name After Church represents the constant contradictions between who we want to be and who we actually are. People spend hours in church being taught how to be virtuous yet drown themselves in alcohol or fall back into their biases the second they leave the pew. This perfectly exemplifies a common human experience. We all have an ideal version of ourselves which we constantly fail to live up to. After Church is about coming to grips with those failures and finding ways to stop them from devouring you.
