SMOOTH SEAS (Don’t Make Good Sailors) is the Norwegian artist Åge Sten Nilsen’s third solo album. Released only 4 months prior to his main band AMMUNITION’s second studio album, the once so flamboyant lipstick wearing glamrock frontman, goes….Folk Pop, taking us on a musical voyage to the bottom of his soul. Produced by the acclaimed Norwegian Folk producer and string master Freddy Holm, who also produced Åge Sten’s first solo album some 18 years ago, this album shows a more mature artist with stories to tell. Being quite a celebrity in his home country Norway, Åge Sten offers brutally personal and self critical stories and reflections through this 10 song strong release that he has managed to keep out of the tabloid headlines for years. According to the artist the album was originally meant to become a Åge Sten Nilsen / Dan Reed collaboration. Coming off an all acoustics tour titled “Acoustic Stories” together in the winter of 2016, the duo intended to record the tour versions of their live set. After recording three of his older songs Åge Sten tried out one of his brand new piano written songs, which worked out so well in the studio that he soon enough had recorded a whole album. From the piano driven melancholic anthem “Pipe Dreams” telling a story of regret and redemption to the Paul McCartney’ish late 60’s flavored “Sundance Kids” about a quite alternative relationship, “Smooth Seas (Don’t Make Good Sailors)” is a musical journey beyond the boundaries of genres.
