Akhila & the Alchemists is an audacious experiment in music making across shores. Based jointly in Chennai (Tamilnadu, India) and Columbus (Ohio, United States), the collective is the brainchild of Akhila Ramnarayan (vocals) who brought together Doug Carraway (guitars, bass, drums), Vedanth Bharadwaj (guitars), Praveen Sparsh (percussion), Shreya Devnath (violin), and Paul Jacob (bass) for their first full-length album together, Woe Begone (2021). The band's 3-song EP The Waves is primarily helmed by Ramnarayan and Carraway with creative/production inputs from Bharadwaj, the three together forming the musical core of the project from the start.

Begun in 2019 as a passion project with individual parts recorded in 5 different studios during the Covid-19 pandemic, the collective's initial foray, Woe Begone, is imbued with a ludic sense of diversity that is still highly individual. It is a rollercoaster of ideas defying the limits of genre and physical distance. Let Sleeping Gods Lie, the single that followed in December 2021, an ethereal, moody ballad on lost love, memory, and cuttlefish, was co-written by Carraway and Ramnarayan, hinting at creative trajectories to come.

Friends since 1998 and musical partners since 2019, Ramnarayan and Carraway have worked entirely remotely, with Bharadwaj close at hand to work on songwriting, tracking, and studio/live performance.
