Alexa Shoen

Alexa Shoen confuses everything with the blues. A San Diego native, Alexa grew up inhaling Motown and funk before beginning to front sixteen-piece big bands at the age of 14. She fell into jazz backwards, by accident and from several different directions, slipping from <a href="spotify:artist:57bUPid8xztkieZfS7OlEV" data-name="The Supremes">The Supremes</a> to <a href="spotify:artist:0iOVhN3tnSvgDbcg25JoJb" data-name="Etta James">Etta James</a> to <a href="spotify:artist:2iE18Oxc8YSumAU232n4rW" data-name="The Jackson 5">The Jackson 5</a> to <a href="spotify:artist:2JfVCMa3FlvQRlLT5uH9zb" data-name="Nancy Wilson">Nancy Wilson</a> to <a href="spotify:artist:0JCxGVxsISZzJHJPUOtceB" data-name="Tower Of Power">Tower Of Power</a> to <a href="spotify:artist:4KDyYWR7IpxZ7xrdYbKrqY" data-name="Bonnie Raitt">Bonnie Raitt</a> – and referencing seamlessly between them.

A lyrical storyteller, she blends the heart of <a href="spotify:artist:6fNmOWQzfOVyHLQ2UqUQew" data-name="Eva Cassidy">Eva Cassidy</a> and the vocal power of <a href="spotify:artist:6Q192DXotxtaysaqNPy5yR" data-name="Amy Winehouse">Amy Winehouse</a> with the warm era-gone-by tone of <a href="spotify:artist:2Kx7MNY7cI1ENniW7vT30N" data-name="Norah Jones">Norah Jones</a>.

In 2011, Alexa broke from traditional big band jazz, and broke from America. She entered the Masters Programme at Leeds College of Music under the tutelage of Kari Bleivik (Røyst Trio) and <a href="spotify:artist:5Sa87Qd0jJ7R7uM7SH7Vug" data-name="You Are Wolf">You Are Wolf</a>, studying Nordic jazz vocalists and experimental contemporary classical composers.

Her most recent release, Lies I Used To Tell Myself About Love, was recorded at <a href="spotify:artist:0nTErwSOllrcUWt3knOG2T" data-name="Jazzanova">Jazzanova</a> Studios in Berlin in collaboration with engineer/producer Ed Bentley (<a href="spotify:artist:1E05B8q4mGKUB0n8Ag0Q7c" data-name="Mogli">Mogli</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:3nOQJdlPEzFVhTEzxwcGax" data-name="Sophie Hunger">Sophie Hunger</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:3oKRxpszQKUjjaHz388fVA" data-name="Parcels">Parcels</a>, and more) and musical director David Riaño Molina (<a href="spotify:artist:5Q5MkfiYIoHEAkHbEntykp" data-name="Ambrodavi">Ambrodavi</a>).
