Ali Tan

He was born in 1981 in Fatih, Istanbul. He received his first ney lessons in 1996 from Neyzen Eymen Gürtan. In 1998, he continued his lessons with Neyzen Ahmed Şahin, an artist at TRT Istanbul Radio, and in 2000, he was accepted into the Department of Basic Sciences at the ITU Turkish Music State Conservatory. During his time at the conservatory, he became a student of Neyzen Niyazi Sayın. He graduated with honors from the conservatory in 2004. In 2008, he completed his master’s degree with a thesis titled "Frets and Positions in Ney Technique of Neyzen Niyazi Sayın", and in 2012, he received his PhD with a dissertation titled "The History and Technical Development of the Ney Instrument". Between 2006 and 2012, he worked as a research assistant in the Instrument Department of ITU TMDK. In 2012, he was appointed to the Faculty of Art, Design, and Architecture at Istanbul Medeniyet University. In 2019, he was awarded the title of professor. He has served in various administrative roles such as dean and board member, and has been involved in administrative processes. He has published academic works focused on the fields of instrument and music science. The artist, who has accompanied two of the most esteemed vocal artists of the era, Doğan Dikmen and Ahmed Şahin, for many years, continues to represent the ney instrument and traditional culture both in Turkey and abroad. Prof. Dr. Ali Tan is married and has one child.
