"A remarkable talent as a composer who links history with a contemporary conception. Martin's tone is expressive, rich and full of melodic invention. Which, given his youthful age speaks to an astonishing maturity as a musician"- Jazzthing
Trumpeter and Composer Alistair Martin has been described as having a "compelling and visionary sound." The cornerstone of Alistair's creativity is a love of creating concept albums.
Alistair released his debut album 'Oblivion' in 2021 on Unit Records. Oblivion was hugely influenced by social and political issues, such as climate change and conflict. The album includes elements from Hip Hop and Electronic Music, fused with a jazz quintet sound. Oblivion was positively reviewed by numerous publications including Jazzthing, Jazz'n'More and Concerto Magazine. The album has now been played more than 250,000 on Spotify.
His upcoming second album 'MONOMYTH 1K' is inspired by Joseph Campbell's book, 'The Hero with a Thousand Faces'. Alistair's love of film, novels and narrative albums are behind his desire to bring a storyline into improvised music. The album features some of the most exciting musicians on the UK jazz scene, Flo Moore, Eddie Lee, Tom Smith and Oren McLoughlin.
Alistair performs regularly as a sideman, including with Tom Smith's Big Band, Shirley Smart's Sextet and with Mornington Lockett. In 2024, Alistair was commissioned to write and perform a new Work for Big Band by the Royal College of Music Junior Department.
