California singer/songwriter and guitarist Allette Brooks issued a trio of folk-based albums that spotlight her talent for witty lyrics (as well as taking on environmental and social issues), all the while with an emphasis on rhythm. A classically trained singer with a three-octave vocal range, Brooks didn't begin playing guitar until she was well into her junior year of college, studying ecology in Botswana. When she arrived back to the U.S.A., Brooks began playing out on a regular basis (in 2000 alone, she played 150 shows in 25 states), and over a five-year span, issued the recordings Privilege (1996), Silicon Valley Rebel (1999), and Swim With Me (2001), all of which Brooks produced herself. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi
