Ambiensce

Ambiensce was born from the discovery in June 2018 that two analog delay pedals stacked astride a looper could warp the inputs into sometimes soft and often strange infinitudes. Each result constitutes an ambiance or atmosphere, but also has a life of its own; each is a small refraction of shared solitude, expressing itself differently each listen through. At its best, it takes on its own identity and conscience (therein lies the name for both artist and medium), and serves as a guide toward pure experience, toward understanding by feeling. Ambiensce is a dream: a long moment of something (un)stuck.


The debut LP from Ambiensce, schliessongs, contains five meditations on a world bent inward. (“schliessung” is a German polyseme meaning “closure”, “shutting”, or “ending”, but also “breaking-up” and, crucially, “forming”.) The album reflects realities on the ground during the 2020 COVID quarantine: from the living room floor to city streets in protest to the western American wilderness and back. It is meant to annihilate timely distinctions, inviting listeners to settle into or wrench awake from a distressed embrace.


schliessongs depends on sounds made intentionally or incidentally by countless people, animals, and natural phenomena. It is a privilege to capture even this miniscule sampling of these creators in all their vitality, coalescence, and hopefulessness. Please be as patient with these sounds as you have needed to with yourself these past three years.
