I knew music making was going to be an important part of my life from an early age. When I got my own computer and discovered Garageband at age ten, I made a recording of my first song- "Cause He's My Catikins". It was just me, singing in unison with myself, about an orange cat who is kinda fat but I love him anyway. That chorus repeats a few times with a turnaround line of "and cookies and milk". I actually think it's still pretty catchy.
After high school, I spent two years at Berklee College of Music. I learned a ton but still felt stuck with my songwriting. Being a songwriter who never learned to play an instrument, I had all these ideas but couldn't really get them out. It was only after I left Berklee that I realized production was what I really needed to be working on. So I threw myself into the deep end and started teaching myself.
I compare it to packing up one day and moving to another country where you don't speak the language. There are going to be many mistakes, but everyday you practice a little more and you get a little bit better. Then one day I listened back to something I was working on and said, "Wait, that's actually kinda good!". I was beyond excited. It went from being such a heavy thing to this moment of joy and lightness. That's why I love making music. It can be an arduous, frustrating, isolating and uncertain process. But that moment when you realize you're onto something; it's a high like nothing else.
