Andrea Obscura is the latest project from Andrea Ramos, a Metro Manila-based singer-songwriter and producer. With her latest project, Andrea retraces her steps and comes back to where it began: singing songs with her guitar. Rather than a retreat, Andrea Obscura is her way to synthesize all the influences and loose ends accumulated over years of musical wandering: from the 80s/90s alt-rock and 2000s pop punk anthems that would shape her taste in music to today; to the 2010s indie dream pop that would guide her production of gentle textures. The result is her debut single in 2022, “Can I Try Again?” a dreamy and sentimental piece of jangle rock whose title is both affirmation and supplication.
Andrea Obscura released her new single entitled “Pool of Blue” on June 2. The song is another try, seeing her expanding her universe of sounds with hazy walls of guitar and breezy melodic interludes. Declaring her plans to come out with a full EP within the year 2023 or early next, Andrea hopes those cuts won’t take as long to write. If the process takes time, it's because she’s constantly working with the tension between the urgent need to say something real, before it passes, and the thoughtful care in doing it in the right way, at the right time. Andrea Obscura is nostalgic dream pop as a sort of confession; it is, in her words, ‘an exercise in earnestness,’ an attempt to express a desire for tender honesty, for once. —Karl Estuart
