“If life was meant to be a straight line, God would have made the world flat.” – Andy Winter
Born in Hungary, my family escaped to Austria, then to Haifa, Israel, as part of the first Jewish exodus. My father became the first mayor of the Hungarian community there before moving us to Canada when I was six. Our first big purchase was a piano for my brother, a young prodigy — and when he wasn’t playing, I was. That’s where my songwriting began, and I never stopped.
Poetry has always been my other passion. I was my high school’s Poet Laureate, and my poem “A Moment Ago and Then” (about JFK’s death) was accepted into the Kennedy Library’s Accessions. Many of my poems have since become lyrics to my songs.
Music found me again through producer Ben McPeek, with early recordings like “Summer Love” and “A Love Forever.” I later released “I Can Hear the Music”, “I Never Really Knew,” and “I’ll Be There,” a song for my daughter.
Today, I continue to write — most recently “Can’t Believe You’re Happening to Me,” “I See Myself in You,” “Saving Time,” and my anthem for the City of Toronto, “Toronto, You Are My Destiny,” arranged by Shelly Berger and performed by members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
