Andromeda was a short-lived studio project formed in Beirut in the early 1980s by Basim Said and Reynald Allam. The two musicians met while playing in Wrong Approach, the band led by bassist Abboud Saadi, an experience that encouraged them to move beyond covers and begin writing their own material. Sharing a love for jazz and fusion, Basim and Reynald drew inspiration from artists including Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, Chick Corea, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Michael Franks. Together they developed a light, airy sound moving between jazz, pop, soul, bossa nova and fusion, recording their music at Studio Farah in East Beirut in 1982. The sessions brought together musicians from their wider Beirut circle, including Abboud Saadi on bass, Walid Itayim on guitar and Tony Farah on keyboards.
Andromeda conceived themselves primarily as a studio band and never performed live. Although their album was completed in 1982, the escalating war in Lebanon that summer ultimately derailed plans for its release. Only a small number of cassette copies were produced, largely for local radio stations, and the recordings remained virtually unheard for decades.
Nearly four decades later, a surviving cassette found its way to Habibi Funk through musician and archivist Munir Khauli, reconnecting the label with Reynald and Basim and uncovering the story behind the recordings which formed part of Habibi Funk's fourth compilation 'Beirut City Pop'.
