Born in Nottingham and raised in the Lincolnshire countryside, Anton Drewery was born into a musical household, his dad Rae played bass with a blues band that supported the likes of Screaming Jay Hawkins, The Moody Blues, Tom Jones and Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, meanwhile his mum Elaine sang the songs of Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and Mahalia Jackson with a New Orleans style jazz band.
Playing in several bands throughout school and college years Anton became a regular on the local live music circuit and as he developed his songwriting skills, performed some of the songs to a regular following. A few years along the line, after raising a family and running a successful carpentry business, came a surprise phone call from sister Corinne (of band Swing Out Sister.)
“SOS were recording at Abbey Road Studios. It was late but I dragged my son Joe out of bed and we drove down to London from Lincolnshire arriving in the early hours. Studio 2, where The Beatles recorded most of their songs, was empty that night so we were given a tour by EMIs lovely engineer who left me (and Joe!) in there whilst they (SOS) went back to work. I sat at the piano which had featured on so many Beatles tracks, most famously Lady Madonna, and penned a few lyrics and some rough chords. By the morning I had written Studio 2 and You Should Be Ashamed, inspiration courtesy of the Fab Four and George Martin…”
Anton Drewery 1967-2022 - Made With A Little Help and a lot of love.
