Southampton-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ash Ellis was spat out of a deep hole in the Earth in 2000, and has wandered aimless ever since, drawn wherever there is music and good vibes.
Spurred on by the DIY attitude of the folk-punk musicians of their teenage years and with a belting voice to back it up, Ash has taken inspiration from the likes of <a href="spotify:artist:4tT8fWyOy0hVI7jo9fJmXX" data-name="Mal Blum">Mal Blum</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:4HemfSCDgnPiHQh8Z6iyd6" data-name="Apes of the State">Apes of the State</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:4IDpDJIDfK96HMLD4Tphyl" data-name="AJJ">AJJ</a> and continuously searched through any music they can get their hands on, in search of flavours, textures and tools to bring back to their own writing.
Ash released they’re first self-produced EP <a href="spotify:album:1EQDms12xTPlQC9G2OaLJQ" data-name="The Black Paintings">The Black Paintings</a> in 2017 and has so far released 10 EPs total, including 2020’s critically-praised <a href="spotify:track:58D118WAchoeyEAV363MA2" data-name="Black Light">Black Light</a> which was noted for its “great sense of story-telling (...), its almost feels like you’re listening to someone reading the pages of the novel.”
Between those two, sits releases such as 2019’s <a href="spotify:track:7HuC4jXQL1pk86fVv7GxZf" data-name="Hazel">Hazel</a> (A full-band studio record exploring the struggling dying breaths of true childhood) and 2018’s <a href="spotify:album:5IV3n0DPv7INIZHF9aTh5J" data-name="Sad Songs for Somber Sundays">Sad Songs for Somber Sundays</a> (An EP consisting of songs that were released once every Sunday through Winter of that year), and instrumental experiments such as <a href="spotify:album:5BZpGuehF1lxyAIzQN0D0e" data-name="(II)">(II)</a> and <a href="spotify:album:0dWEYxblAtmQH8AdABOP10" data-name="(IV)">(IV)</a>.
Coming out a two-year hiatus, Ash has recently made an explosive return to the Southampton music scene, playing songs new and old which aim to excite the mind and warm the heart.
With even more raw energy and passion than before, guys, gals and non-binary pals, it’s Ash Ellis!
