I grew up in the Smoky Mountains. As a kid, I'd run barefoot climbing trees on summer afternoons until my mom called me in for supper.
I loved the simple life.
My great-grandparents traveled doing tent revivals, and my grandma told me stories of her and Dolly Parton playing together because Dolly's grandpa was preacher friends with my great-grandpa. Music and worship was in my blood.
I learned music on my grandmother's old upright piano in her musty basement, and I'd sing songs to Jesus for hours.
I never felt good enough for God, though. I was raised on hellfire and brimstone preaching. But there was something inside of me that longed for freedom and true relationship with Jesus without fear.
The simple life faded when I strived to be enough for God, never knowing his unconditional approval. Religion taught me that God was mostly in a bad mood, and I just wanted acceptance. Anxiety and stress took over my life.
Years later, Jesus started showing me his unconditional approval and love because of his sacrifice. He wrecked my old framework with freedom and hope. The simple life was restored--a peaceful life walking with Jesus each day.
So now, I sing about it. You'll hear some folk influence because that's my heritage. Honestly, I'm just a hippy mountain girl from Appalachia.
So now, I make music because I love Jesus, and I want you to know how much he loves you.
To the ones who always wanted God but never felt like you were enough for him--these songs are for you.
