Growing up in the small town of Sandpoint, Idaho, my adventurous mother took me camping, hiking, and to various music festivals. As a child, I was always singing, performing shows for my family, and even standing on restaurant tables to sing for strangers. I covered artists like Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, and even legends like Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn.
When I was six, we moved to Portland, Oregon, where country music wasn’t as popular. The hip-hop/R&B scene quickly influenced me, but it didn’t feel authentic. I was creating music to conform to trends and mirror my surroundings.
Last year, I released a song called “Herself,” heavily auto-tuned. During the performance, I essentially lip-synced due to the auto-tune. After the show, I felt deeply sad and disappointed because singing isn’t about following trends; it’s about expressing myself and bringing joy to others.
Realizing the need for change, I felt discouraged but then something extraordinary happened. I reconnected with an old friend from my teenage years. We quickly bonded and started dating. He reminded me of my roots, taking me camping, immersing me in nature, and most importantly, introducing me to country and folk music again.
Inspired by this connection, he encouraged me to create my latest release, “Willow Tree.” This is the first song where I feel like I’ve rediscovered my true self.
