“I guess the world spins faster than we thought” Austin Adams sings on 2004, the stellar opening track of “Eggshells”, his unhurried debut LP. It’s just one in a dozen plainspoken phrases-turned-sentiments woven throughout his Freshman offering. And yet, it feels singular.
Adams posesses a penchant for deceptively simple lyricism typically reserved for veteran writers. Greats like Jackson Browne or John Darnielle. Writers that know there’s as much power in the words you don’t use, as the ones you do.
That restraint is what makes “Eggshells” so special. The guitars are melodic but melancholy. The keys are artful but subdued. Each instrument exists only to serve the song. Each lyric, to further the plot.
Maybe this patient precision is the result of Adams’ day job as a mason. Laying brick, placing block, leveling and tuckpointing, hour after hour.
Or maybe it’s what happens when you’re the quiet one of 6 brothers growing up in rural Ashtabula, OH.
But regardless of its origin, the result is undeniable. A record that revels in small moments and big questions. A perfect introduction to an artist who seems to have always been.
