A multifaceted musician, Azmyl Yunor (born in Kuala Lumpur in 1977) was part of the wave of independent musicians hailing from Malaysia and neighboring regions in Asia as the 21st century dawned. Head of his own label (Rapidear), Yunor explored a number of styles on his many self-released collections, beginning with the 1997 cassette-only Whatever. After the buzz his initial tape created, Yunor released another three cassettes, eventually branching out to the CD format with 2004's Jikalauan EP and 2005's alt-country-tinged Tenets EP. In addition to his solo work, Yunor also recorded a full-length album with his band, the Sigarettes, which was due for release at some point in 2008. His support of the indie rock and singer/songwriter movement in that part of Asia (e.g., Pete Teo, Shelley Leong, and Shanon Shah) included the formation of the Experimental Musicians and Artists Co-Op and the organization of the annual KL Sing Song festival. ~ Chris True, Rovi
