For more than ten years, the Berlin-based band b3 has stood for a distinctive sound somewhere between jazz, rock, blues, and pop—powerful, groove-driven, and always open to evolution.
Behind the band name are keyboardist and music producer Andreas Hommelsheim and drummer Lutz Halfter—longtime musical companions and close friends alike. Since the band’s beginnings in 2013, this duo has formed the foundation of b3’s unmistakable character.
With the new album “THE NEXT STEP!”, b3 open another chapter in their shared story. Over the course of more than a year, Hommelsheim and Halfter worked intensively on the material. The title says it all: the sound has become freer, more versatile, and more emotional, offering a more personal insight into the biography of songwriter Andreas Hommelsheim than ever before.
The new songs reflect on the “good old days” as much as on the courage to take new paths. They address departure, change, and the challenges and doubts that come with them. On “THE NEXT STEP!”, melancholy and emotion meet optimism and a forward-looking spirit; thoughtful lyrics encounter danceable grooves. The characteristic interplay between keyboards and drums remains the foundation, but is sonically expanded through the contribution of numerous high-profile guest musicians. This diversity lends the album additional depth and dynamic range. Overall, the compositions are more compact, direct, and focused than on previous releases.
