As one of her generation's first viral megastars (with a following of over 50 million across all platforms), Ariel Martin - known to her supporters as 'Baby Ariel' - had reached a fork in the road. Having already starred in films, published a book, and released the music her record label insisted upon, Ariel realized that her current path may lead to conventional success, but with it, a lack of fulfillment.
“Maybe I'm crazy but I asked to be released from my label and be independent. I realized that making the music others expected of me was not making me happy. I needed to make music from my heart - straight from me,” Ariel shares. “Some people paint or dance. Others do therapy. I sit at my piano or with my guitar and write melodies & words. Songwriting is my therapy.”
Casting aside the bubblegum pop she'd released while with the label, Ariel wrote and recorded "blue", her debut ep, during the 2020 pandemic on a laptop almost entirely in her home-studios in LA and Florida. The music defies easy categorization and it's lyrics are deeply personal reflecting Ariel's self-discovery journey and personal growth. Behind Ariel’s hypnotic vocals, the music is mellow and ethereal - drawing influence from trip hop, psychedelic rock, and alt-pop by weaving acoustic, electric and bass guitars with pianos, synth pads, and multi-layered rhythms.
"blue" shows that despite her artist name still having “Baby” front and center, Ariel Martin is grown up.
