Balian

Balian formed in 2009 in Denpasar, Bali.
Balian’s original line up was Edward Andrews – guitar & vocals, Indra Made – bass, and Gembull – drums. We tragically lost Indra Made in 2018, but want to play on in his honour. Our new friend Aaron Lawrie joined us on guitar and Edward has moved to bass for the time being.
The word ‘Balian’ means witch doctor or spiritual healer, a practice unique to the magical island of Bali. The band also chose this name because the project started with rehearsals and jam sessions in Edward’s house on the street, ‘Tukad Balian’.
The music is rock, drawing upon influences from rock heroes of the 60s to the present day. However, with all due respect to their roots; Balian is looking to move forward… or at least wherever the music ultimately decides on taking them.
Balian recently released their first album 'Kingdom of Dogs ' with the lead single 'Beautiful Mess '. The film clip was directed by Erick Est and produced by Est Movies.
On seeing the video music critique Rudolph Dethu wrote:
“After a few (painful) years, not releasing anything, minimum regular performances, Balian is finally back at their big, badass, ballsy best with ‘Beautiful Mess’. Have always loved their stuff. A strong reminiscence of 90s grunge tradition & 60s-70s hard rock. Yet a hint of Pacific North West sludgy route via Helmet Highway”
