Bamboo Bonsai is the solo recording project of Brisbane multi-instrumentalist/producer/engineer Yusuf Memon. Born in the UK to an Irish mother and a Pakistani father, Memon was exposed to a plethora of diverse artistry from a young age. However, it was only after he moved to Australia that his love for music would skyrocket, picking up drums at age 11 and guitar at age 15. Slowly and surely, Memon would begin to find himself, both personally and creatively.
Bursting onto the Brisbane music scene in 2020, Bamboo Bonsai's 7-piece live would garner enigmatic status swiftly, selling out four headline shows in 8 months, as well as landing on bills with the likes of <a href="spotify:artist:5i4zIS2TFCkWoy6FNEvhNb" data-name="Boss Moxi">Boss Moxi</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:28iYDzCwttWssjiCAOnfUq" data-name="Young Lions">Young Lions</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:52eVN5OWWaV4fVShDeJIj3" data-name="Sahara Beck">Sahara Beck</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:2ca4hVRIXva9fMqrrU4aNJ" data-name="Great Sage">Great Sage</a>. 2021 further accentuated Bamboo Bonsai's exponential growth, playing larger and larger shows as the year progressed, and releasing three new singles that were cleaner, punchier and all in all, better.
Moving away from the rock sound which embodied earlier releases, Bamboo Bonsai has slowly shifted towards an aesthetic which embodies shoegaze, dream-pop and groove-driven neo-psychedelia, taking influences from bands such as <a href="spotify:artist:56ZTgzPBDge0OvCGgMO3OY" data-name="Beach House">Beach House</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:5Wabl1lPdNOeIn0SQ5A1mp" data-name="Cocteau Twins">Cocteau Twins</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:3G3Gdm0ZRAOxLrbyjfhii5" data-name="my bloody valentine">my bloody valentine</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:5INjqkS1o8h1imAzPqGZBb" data-name="Tame Impala">Tame Impala</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:1uiEZYehlNivdK3iQyAbye" data-name="Tom Misch">Tom Misch</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:2rspptKP0lPBdlJJAJHqht" data-name="Yussef Dayes">Yussef Dayes</a>.
