Band in Dystopia

Band in Dystopia is an indie rock artist from Barrow-in-Furness, UK. The artist name and ethos are that of songwriter and producer, John Rennie, who started the project in late-2021 with the mission of writing and producing an Orwell/Bowie inspired concept album to tell the story of a fictional band living through the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Rennie initially took the project in another direction when Band in Dystopia released the Christmas charity single, Light a Candle, to raise money for hometown charities. In 2023, Rennie led a public campaign in an attempt to get the track a Christmas chart position. Light a Candle peaked at No.5 in the UK iTunes chart and No.10 in the Official Singles Download Chart on Christmas Day 2023.

Band in Dystopia’s songwriting and production is influenced by Oasis, The Jam, The Stone Roses and David Bowie. Tracks have a classic indie rock sound with Gallagher-esque vocals, Squire-esque guitar hooks and Bowie/Weller style lyrics.

Band in Dystopia is due to release its long awaited concept album in 2025 titled, '2020-2021'.
