BARO BANDA is the truly global band…physically spanning the globe from Australia to Turkey, existing in space and time in the city where uniVERSES collide – Istanbul – their music is an emotional BAROmeter of the city in which the band was born, extreme in every direction and committed to the NOW.
In 2006 on a street stage in Beyoğlu, the pumping heart of Istanbul, musicians from Australian band Unified Gecko were joined by some of the great gypsy musicians of Turkey. What happened during that performance transcended cultural background and language differences to become the stuff of legend. The night continued for the next four months and grew to be an enormous regular party. Thousands came nightly to dance and drink on the street, homeless people arm in arm with wealthy European business men, all caught up in the frenzy of the music.
From the first night they called themselves GeckoRomanProject, but over the following years as the band developed, they took a more fitting and permanent name – Baro Banda – which in Rom language means band of white friends of the Romani people. They have since performed all over Turkey and Europe and now have finally documented their journey with elekTRoman.
