The Beach Bullies were a short-lived British post-punk duo consisting of Soft Boys associate James A. Smith and vocalist Jill Fricker. Their minimalist, lo-fi tunes, recorded entirely with a guitar and drum machine, were alternately witty and wistful, balancing sentiments of heartache and loneliness with a sharp sense of humor. The duo only recorded one LP, We Rule the Universe, which appeared on Musclebound Records in 1980. A second album was attempted, but never finished. Smith later sang and played on several Robyn Hitchcock albums throughout the '80s. In 2015, We Rule the Universe was reissued for the first time thanks to Manufactured Recordings. The re-release also included the unreleased demos for the group's abandoned second album. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
