beauty is the end is a transatlantic recording project, marrying soul with smarts, progressive rock with heart, and pop with ambition. The result is music of cinematic grandeur, excruciating intimacy, and wild imagination.
Collaborators Clinton Degan and Cullen Corley met in the Boston art-rock scene as sidemen in the eclectic School for Robots. Clinton's elaborately detailed, story-driven songwriting found a foil in Cullen's drumming, at times bombastic, humorous, and improvisatory.
Rounded out by the talents of Kirsten Lamb and Daniel Levine, their first LP Stories of Earth mined progressive-folk and donned lavish orchestral backdrops and blown-out guitars in its exploration of highly personal stories told in grand arcs. Jack Younger (Lake Street Dive, Ketman) of Watch City Studios produced the effort, recorded to 2” tape over nine months of 2014.
Critics praised the effort, with Martin Hutchinson of ProgRadar calling it “...a real ball of nervous, upbeat musical energy with a freshness that has to be heard to be believed...” while Rick Dumont of The Noise observed “...this album is one of those unique tomes of musical storytelling that stands up to the continuous loop.”
Their follow-up LP White Knuckle Dress is set to be released in the summer of 2021.
FFO: Queen, Sufjan Stevens, Soundgarden, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Dire Straits
