Beff is the solo musical project of its quasi-eponymous Glaswegian founder, Beth McNeilly. An avid musician since their early childhood, Beff’s stripped-down approach to songwriting and recording engenders a sound that mystifies, inspires and consoles. Beff draws inspiration from an eclectic range of musical styles, each of which is carefully weaved into the elaborate soundscapes of their music. Far from schmaltzy affectation, their synthesis of this veritable smorgasbord of influence within the confines of their phone’s built-in mic manifests itself as a bedroom musician’s quiet transcendence.
Beff’s debut EP, A Nose Boop, serves as a demonstration of this ecstasy of influence. Folkish acoustic pickings ring out over warm, ethereal vocals. Shades of musique concrète abound in its instrumental tracks. Warped, melancholic guitars riff beneath gloomy, droning synths. Perhaps a broad reflection on their life so far, prompted by lockdown, A Nose Boop pieces together a tableau in the listener’s mind that looks akin to the tableau of its cover.
Beff’s latest release, PAUSE, pushes their sound in a more experimental direction. Ambient, droning, on occasion cacophonous; and with a desolate, ominous cover to boot. Finding new inspiration in the works of artists like Grouper or Imagine Drowning, this EP offers an ephemeral glimpse into a darker time in Beff’s life.
