Benjamin Mørk is the pianist and composer with background from the metal industry. His current work revolves his large-scale sound-installation Music On Display and sound and his distinct playing-style, Mechanical Piano.
Instead of trying to make the piano sound like a modern concert grand he has removed all the unnecessary parts and discovered there were lots of mechanical sounds inside the instrument.
Through a system of homemade microphones he has now isolated and amplified the mechanical sounds from the release of the keys and the pressing/lifting of pedals, and is incorporating them into his music. This is a special kind of minimalistic music for piano, combined with electronics.
«In a world of polished MIDI-signals Mørk's mechanical piano sounds refreshing and strange.» (Subjekt, Oslo)
