During its three-year existence (1997-2000), Boston's Betwixt released one single, 1997's Lucky 13 b/w Seahorse, and two full-length albums, 1998's Moustache and 1999's The Salty Tang. With Gordon Wither's sublime cello in place of a traditional guitar, Betwixt's sound was rounded out by Leah Callahan's charmingly playful and sinister vocals, Tom Devaney's jaunty, multi-faceted guitar work, and Dave Nelson's variety-pack drumming, found sound percussion, and clarinet. All Music Review described the band's sound as both dynamic and sophisticated with "winding vaguely Old World-inspired melodies and arrangements." About the band's final release, The Salty Tang, College Music Journal wrote, "This beautifully strange record, which is lodged tightly in the gorge that divides avant-pop and art-damaged rock, is elusive and challenging enough to puzzle and enchant even the most fickle listeners."
