"There's a line between genius and crazy, and I think God put me here to find out where it is," said John Tinkelenberg.
That statement is par for the course for the enigmatic singer-songwriter from Charlotte, N.C. He’s been in a car chase. He’s been chased by an alligator. And he once worked at a chocolate factory.
Right now, however, Tinkelenberg has music on his mind as the frontman of rock band/project/collective Beyond Confused. Tinkelenberg said the name was something he kicked around until it stuck.
“It's a good description of the human condition and my overall state of mind,” Tinkelenberg said. “I don’t even remember where it came from. It just speaks to me. Why ask why?"
Beyond Confused originated in 2019, a much simpler time. For Tinkelenberg, the resulting music was some of his best writing. The new songs were written in locales such as St. Louis, Boston and the mountains of North Carolina. Recording took place during the coronavirus pandemic.
“Songs have a mind of their own,” Tinkelenberg said. “They come from a parallel universe, someplace that transcends time and space. All you can do is point the antenna and wait.”
The band’s debut single “Better Off on Mars” was released in October 2020.
