Big Band Berenbostel is the student big band of Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium Berenbostel. Founded in 1994 by Bodo Schmidt, it has since become one of Germany’s top youth big bands. After 25 years at the helm, Schmidt handed over artistic direction to Felix Maier, who continues the tradition, introduces fresh ideas and drives the ensemble’s musical growth.
They’ve been very successful at Lower Saxony’s “Jugend Jazzt” competition, claiming the state championship six times—and have captured the national crown on four occasions (2007, 2008, 2016 and 2023). In 2024, Big Band Berenbostel once again secured the title of Best Student Big Band of Lower Saxony, earning their spot at the federal finals in Mainz and Wiesbaden.
Big Band Berenbostel has worked or shared the stage with internationally renowned artists such as Till Brönner, Jiggs Whigham, Michael League (Snarky Puppy) and Ingolf Burkhardt (NDR Bigband), and more recently with Erik van Lier, Jörn Marcussen-Wulff, and Drew Zaremba. Concert tours have taken them to the USA, Poland, Italy, Russia, and Canada, and standout performances—including an invitation to play in Berlin’s Ministergarten—underscore their reputation for excellence on both national and international stages.
