Across four full-length, independent releases, Big Brutus (Sean Bryant) has consistently demonstrated an ease and grace in both his singing and songwriting: sensitive and raw, poignant and reserved, all at once. This is particularly evident in the song, “Louise,” from 2017s The Odd Willow. An immediate hit, this song has garnered more than 8 million streams on Spotify alone and continues to grow.
Two more albums followed in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic: Fun Times in Sadland, drawing influence from traditional big band ensembles, and the somber folk songs of A Pale Woman. Both albums were well-received.
Like many artists during the pandemic, Big Brutus started recording ideas for songs at home. Without the normal constraints of a traditional recording studio, Big Brutus and friends developed an organic, complex album with sudden twists and turns of genre and mood. The result was a fearless sonic exploration of our unique stories and experiences — of hope, longing, sadness, and joy — that tell a more universal story and paint a beautiful picture of humanity.
Birdie, a new album by Big Brutus, out now.
