Big Oak is an experimental folk band started in 2014 by frontman Joe Feldmann. Feldmann took great inspiration from folk bands like Fleet Foxes, Gregory Alan Isakov, and Sufjan Stevens. After recruiting the help of guitarist Thomas Gumpper, drummer Ricardo Rodriguez, guitarist Daniel Szmyrgala, violinist Louis Ho, and bassist Joel Tansey, the group began developing their songs at live shows in the Iowa City area. Soon, they began recording material at United Action for Youth. In 2016, they released their eponymous debut album. They are still active, playing shows intermittently with a fluid lineup of string, brass, and bass players.
