A little bit medieval studies, a little bit rock and roll. Big Pony is the solo project of Anthony Saracino (me). I’m a guitarist from New York’s Finger Lakes region. I'm also a PhD student researching the mystical writing of medieval and early modern women (shoutouts both to Hildegard von Bingen and Hildegard von Blingin'). Circles and Lines (2022) has been described as “the soundtrack to the rock‘n roll ren fair,” and on “Medievalish” (2025) I remix some actual ancient material. The music for “A ciascun’alma presa” comes from an 8th century elegy; “Rose, liz, printemps, verdure” is a French love song from the 1300s. (Check out "Medievalish" on bandcamp if you want to learn more about my sources.)
My collabs with musicians of the past aren’t influenced by historical performance practices (but check out La Reverdie if you’re interested in that!). I play harp and recorder on my cover of "Masterpiece" but my instruments aren't medieval replicas. And the blend of ocarina, resonator, and electric guitars on "Cavalli" or the bouzouki and harp combo on "Sign" convey something meditative and timeless rather than medieval. Medieval-inspired or not, this music showcases my love for folk, rock, and fingerstyle guitar.
By day I teach young people how to write and do research– which in the age of AI is a wild ride! If you want to support this eclectic project I welcome donations at Fan Support link.
