BirdSMITH's very first single Kiss It Better was snatched up for UK's national pop channel BBC Radio 2 for it's play-list and the enigmatic BirdSMITH were starting to get noticed, with people asking "Who is BirdSMITH?" on Reddit. BirdSMITH is a music project helmed by South London born artist Tom Van Can who is lyricist, composer and singer, he works with a rotating cast of singers, players, producers inc Manic producer Dave Eringa and veteran John Reynolds.
On Van Can's first outing under the name BirdSMITH, Jade Danielle Williams' powerful voice on Kiss It Better, more than delivers Tom's vision to touch both head and heart. Unashamedly acknowledging the shoulders on which current pop rock stands, the aim of BirdSMITH to create music starting from an emotional position with lyrics and mood being the starting point and then building from that. Eschewing obvious pop trends there is a nod to past musical eras without resorting to retro nostalgia and pastiche. And, if this is not specifically deliberate, it is part of BirdSMITH's DNA.
Most of all, BirdSMITH creates timeless songs with carefully crafted words, hooks and melodies - produced in a mostly analogue fashion with real instruments - resonating on an organic level.
Lyrically, we are hearing lines that range from conceptual wordplay, with themes of love, regret, pain and healing - its a lot about feeling on a poetic level - painting pictures with words - no wonder that Tom Van Can is also a filmmaker.
