Post-punk/alternative rock icon, writer, historian, and self-described "militant peacenik" Julian Cope formed the improvisational, "free action" English space/stoner rock outfit Black Sheep in 2008 after releasing a solo record with the same name on his own Head Heritage label. The ten-piece band, which is comprised of nearly all the players on the aforementioned Black Sheep album, utilizes mountains of orchestral percussion, acoustic guitars, and Mellotron 400s to great effect, resulting in spirited performances that can run anywhere from five minutes to thirty. The group's two-disc, debut album Kiss My Sweet Apocalypse, which featured primal, ambient meditations on notable revolutionaries Che Guevara, Ulrike Meinhof, and Leila Khaled, arrived in 2009 on Invada Records. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
