Black String, based on the Korean traditional music and its improvisational aspects like in jazz, attempts to create a unique language through Asian intuition and musical idioms. Black String seeks a new sound that can internalize a variety of musical expressions in the traditional music, as well as harmonize with other expressions in the world music.
The group was founded in 2011 as part of a government-sponsored cultural exchange program between Korea and UK titled “UK Connection.” The band made its debut at Jarasum International Jazz Festival(Korea) and London Jazz Festival(UK) in 2012 collaborating with UK artists; Tim Garland(Saxes), John Turville(Piano/Keys), Asaf Sirkis(Drums) and Gwilym Simcock(Piano).
The band consists of Yoon Jeong Heo(geomungo), Aram Lee(daegum&yanggeum), Jean Oh(guitar, electronics) and Min Wang Hwang(vocal, percussion).
Since its foundation, the band has been expanding its musical horizon by teaming up with prominent Korean artists. They have performed at WOMEX 2016, Babel Mad Music 2017 and many more world renowned festivals and venues.
Black String’s international debut album Mask Dance brought them Songlines Music Awards Winner in 2018(Asia & South Pacific). The brand new album Karma released on ACT in 2019.
