Mining similarly dark experimental territory as Forest Swords, Haxan Cloak, and Vessel, producer Boothroyd (full name Peter Boothroyd) grew up in Manchester, England and turned to making music to alleviate his boredom. After moving to London for school, he began working on his music in earnest, uploading tracks that caught the ear of Tri Angle Records, who signed him in March 2014. That June, the song "NYC" offered a glimpse of Boothroyd's challenging, percussion-heavy Idle Hours EP.
