Boštjan Simon (saxophone / electronics) is known for his work in electroacoustic groups Etceteral (Glitterbeat), Velkro (Clean Feed), Trus! (Moonlee / Radio Študent) and the duo with the percussionist Zlatko Kaučuč (Jazz Cerkno Records).
His debut solo album Fermented Reality delves into the mix of acoustic and electronic sounds from saxophone and modular synthesizer. Boštjan Simon takes Jackie McLean’s statement “Saxophone is a drum" and brings it to the fore by celebrating the percussive aspect of the saxophone. The key clanks of the instrument are amplified to the point of sonic feedback and processed by external effects. The instrument is modified with sensors to enable triggering of the oscillators in his modular system with a new experimental interactive module Octosense. There is an interplay from combining these different possibilities and exploring the electroacoustic coupling/decoupling of heterogeneous sounds. In this way, the cold object of the saxophone comes to life in a process of anaerobic and creative fermentation.
