With “Silent Science”, B•R•A•U•N continues down the path he paved with Mackintosh Braun and brings his music even further from the eighties influences that first sparked his inspiration. The concept began for Braun as an awareness of the personal freedoms that he had sacrificed to live in the comforts of new technology. A longing for a more simple life pushes and pulls this album from past to present. From undeniable dance hooks, to sleepwalking chill-out, we meander our way from disco naps to lucid slumbers.
The opening track “Washed Away”, a hard hitting electro banger, features a sax solo from "Mr. Casual" himself, Charlie DeChant of Hall & Oates. Ben's father Michael played drums alongside Charlie in H&O throughout Ben's childhood. “Prague”, perhaps the most anthemic moment on the record, features magnetic vocal melodies awash with reverb and layers of analog synths. "Gardens" follows with hushed vocals and chorused guitars. Reflective and intriguing at turns, the song waivers from 80s indie rock to lush synth-pop. As the album moves towards hypnotic dance driven beats like the title track, “Silent Science”, Braun’s multi-layered production style takes center stage, blending his muted Gibson SG Bass with a Juno 106, and chopped up vocal samples. It's in this last song on the album that Braun's added color and dimension brings us to a place that is both forward-looking and retrospective.
