A lot can happen in 20 years. Singer songwriter Brendan Ranney knows this all too well as he prepares for the release of his debut record, Slightly Out Of Focus. “I hadn’t really touched a guitar or even written anything in 19 years. I got caught up in the race of life, absent minded and just surviving.” he explains. In what seems like a lifetime ago, Ranney stopped playing music all together. He states his struggles with mental health as being a primary reason to walk away following some pretty heavy life events. “I was pretty despondent at the time and making some pretty poor decisions and I had to make a change,” he explains. Choosing to focus on his family was his first priority in putting his life back together. “I felt I had to put music and anything related to it in the rearview mirror,” he adds. However, burying that part of himself would be difficult to maintain. It would ultimately take a global pandemic to open some deep seeded family wounds that lead him to pick up the guitar again. “I had grown tired of trying to live up to the expectations of ghosts and I decided to pull over and stop,” he stated. It would be that experience that opened the flood gates, out pouring what would become this record. The first single “Sail Away” hits on the reality of owning past mistakes and perhaps accepting unnecessary blame. The result is a very honest and sincere song. Raw, genuine and unique. From nowhere this songwriter reemerges with a voice that shares a common experience.
