I think a big part of why I started writing music is because I felt so completely alone for most of my life. And when I write, I get to know myself. Who I really am underneath it all. What I have to say. What feels good to say. And what is hard to say. And even just in the writing of something, I start feeling so much less alone, like I’m truly connecting to myself for the first time. And then sharing it with the world is just this amazing added bonus. Because if I can get one message through to someone else, which is the message I got from my own hero’s music (David Bowie), it’s that you are not alone. I am here, feeling it all too. The good, the bad, and the ugly. “Rock n Roll Suicide” is one of my all time favourite songs because of when he sings out “you’re not alone, just turn on with me and you’re not alone”. And that song got me through so many dark times when I really needed it. I hope someday to give that gift to someone else with something I write.
