Buckner & Garcia was an American musical duo most notably known for the 1982 hit "Pac-Man Fever." The group consisted of Jerry Buckner and Gary Garcia, who began their collaboration in Akron, Ohio.
The duo's breakthrough came with their 1981 song "Pac-Man Fever." Inspired by the immense popularity of the arcade game. Initially rejected by several major labels, it was eventually released by an independent label, BGO Records, and gained traction after being played on a local morning show. The song became an instant hit, and the duo was soon signed to Columbia/CBS Records.
Capitalizing on this success, the record label requested a full album of video game-themed songs. The album featured songs about other popular arcade games of the era, including "Do the Donkey Kong," "Ode to a Centipede," and "Hyperspace." The single and album became a cultural touchstone of the early 1980s video game craze selling over 2 1/2 million copies and earning them two gold records.
In the mid-1990s, the duo re-recorded the entire Pac-Man Fever album and released it independently on CD.
Following Garcia's passing in 2011, Jerry Buckner continued his career as a songwriter and producer with songs recorded by Anne Murray, Bertie Higgins, Seiko. In 2012, he co-produced the song "Wreck-It, Wreck-It Ralph!" for the Disney film Wreck-It Ralph, which was credited to "Buckner & Garcia" in honor of the duo.
